Adopt a Dog

Our dog adoptions are fueled by Pedigree.

We recommend that you follow the steps below for a successful adoption:

Step 1

The first thing we strongly recommend is that you take advantage of our Meet Your Match service to find your perfect pet.  It’s kind of like the “e-Harmony” of finding your new best friend!

Step 2

Next, view our Adoptable dogs to select the one or ones you might be interested in using the Meet Your Match results from step 1.

Step 3

While you’re searching for the perfect pet to adopt, we can pre-qualify your adoption application to avoid any delays in the adoption process. Complete and submit our Dog Adoption Application, even if you have not yet selected your new family member. Please note: If not submitting your application online, download and submit your completed application either by fax  at 313.943.2262, or scan and send it back in as either a pdf image or a high-res jpg via e-mail to friends@dearbornanimals.org.

Step 4

Visit the shelter (2661 Greenfield, Dearborn) to meet with the pet(s) you have selected. There are staff members and volunteers at the shelter who will facilitate a “get acquainted” meet-and-greet. They can also answer any questions you may have about the history and behavior of the animal.  We are there to help!

Step 5

Work with one of our adoption counselors to complete your adoption. They can answer any questions you may have. If the meeting goes well and both the shelter and you agree that this is the right pet, some additional checking of your application will take place. Again, we want this to be a successful adoption for you and the pet, so this “checking” is to ensure a long-lasting friendship.

Step 6

Sign the Adoption Agreement, which asks you to agree to certain things for the ongoing care of your future family member and pay our very affordable adoption fee. Now it’s time to enjoy your new family member! See post adoption tips and recommendations.
