Microchip Clinics

How many “lost pet” signs have you seen? Tragically, millions of pets never make it back home. Now you can join thousands of responsible pet owners who have identified their pets with a microchip.

Every pet adopted from Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter goes home with a microchip. And, because we want all pets to “make it home,” we offer low-cost vouchers so you can get your pet permanently identified. Vouchers for a microchip are sold at the shelter for $15 each. Each month the vouchers may be redeemed at one of our participating veterinary clinics.

About Microchips

The microchip is a tiny computer chip that has an identification number programmed into it, and is encapsulated within a biocompatible material. The whole device is small enough to fit inside a hypodermic needle and is simply injected under the skin of our pets, where it will stay for the life of the animal.

This provides a permanent, positive identification which cannot be lost, altered, or intentionally removed—making it a safe, simple, and inexpensive way to protect your pet against loss or theft.

The computer memory in the AVID Microchip contains a unique number; no two animals will ever have the same number. A special chip reader recognizes the radio signal from the chip and reads this number through the skin of your pet.

The Friends use AKC microchips.  AKC registers the numbers to the shelter.  When we implant a chip, we record your information.  If any lost animals are found, we in turn contact the registered owner.  You may pay an additional fee to register your pet directly with AKC.
