Valentine Pooch Paw-ty!

The Friends Pet Training Center is having a Valentine Pooch Paw-ty Saturday February 11th! What better way to celebrate then with your four legged Valentine.

 We are going to have fun and play games like:   

• Most kisses in 30 seconds 
• Peanut Butter lick
• Race to my love
  
• Find the hidden treat

Homemade dog treats are available from the Friends own Fido Barkery.

Select from one of three paw-ty times:

• 11:00 a.m. – noon (large-breed dogs)
• 12:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. (small-breed dogs)
• 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. (all-size dogs)

Call Linda  to reserve your spot at (313) 943-2697! Space is limited to 10 dogs per paw-ty. Cost is only $10!

Training Tip 

With the weather being very  unpredictable it can be hard to burn off some of your dogs energy. Here is another fun game that you can play with your dog, this was summited by Diane:

• Identify a dog treat that your dog loves.  (I use “Bil Jac Gooberlicious” or cut up organic chicken or turkey hotdogs.) 
• Put your dog in a crate, outside, or in a  separate room. 
• Hide the treats throughout your basement and/or house.  Start out by leaving them in open/easy to find locations.
• Bring your dog out and tell them to “find the treats”.  If they don’t understand, walk towards the first treat and  let him sniff the treat out.
• Your dog will figure out the game very fast if they realize it involves their nose and a great reward – the treat! After your dog understands the game, you can make it more and more challenging.  

 I play this with all 4 of my shepherds at once.  (Please note, I do not have any food aggression issues with my dogs and the pack works together to “hunt” the food.  If your dog is food aggressive and you have multiple dogs, I would suggest playing the game individually).

Ask the Trainer

Thank you for the great response to the Ask the Trainer, here is one of the questions.

Q:  “My dog doesn’t like the cold weather or when it’s raining or snowing.  I have her go outside but even after I see her go, she comes in and will pee or poop.  Any suggestions?” — Submitted by Claudia.

A:  Claudia, that is often a problem with small dogs, dogs that were house trained during the summer months, short coated dogs and dogs that are getting older.

Putting a coat or sweater and boots on some dogs will help to keep them warm and dry enough to go completely outside.

Shoveling an area that is free of snow, having a covered area that is ok for them to go under when outside, or giving your small dog an area in the house with potty pads will help prevent accidents from happening when the weather is not pleasent out.

Here is my story: I have been one of the Friends Fido Bakery bakers since the first Pooch Paw-ty in 2009. My dogs have been the taste testers of all the different cookies, brownies, and cakes that I make.

I have not found a recipe that my dogs do not like, even if I get them a little dark, they will still eat them.

Here is the recipe that I made for the Valentine Pooch Paw-ty and for my dogs for Valentine’s day.

Sammy Davis is a spirited 18-month-old (12/20) border collie mix. He weighs 38 lbs. and is crate trained. Sammy Davis is an active dog and did well in his temperament testing but tends to be shy and needs a home with no cats, and no children under 8 years old. Sammy has gotten used to other dogs in his foster home and reacts well after he warms up to friendly dogs. We think he’d do best in a calm household where he’ll have a chance to shine. He enjoys being petted and given attention, and he likes to go for walks. Sammy has been neutered and is spending time in a foster home where he’s chilling out and undergoing training to learn the manners and skills he’ll need to succeed in his next home. I just started to catch a frisbee!

Groovey is one far-out feline! This cool cat has a short, sleek black coat with a very tiny bit of white on his chest and tummy, gorgeous gold eyes, and an outstandingly outgoing personality. He’ll reach out for you when you visit because he’s got lots of affection to share and wants to be near people. Groovey is 1 year old and has been neutered, so he’s ready to go home. Visit him in the Cat Community Center.

Six-month-old Loki is just one of our Valentine spokes-pups.  She has the heart of a champion in a little broken body.  Loki came to us a stray with extensive damage to her pelvis.

Attention, volunteers! 

Our dogs and cats need you more than ever!

If you’ve got an hour or two to spare this weekend or any time, please come to the shelter and spend some time with the animals.  Their success in getting adopted relies greatly on their behavior, and that’s where you come in.  Teach a dog to walk nicely on a leash, brush a cat, or introduce visitors to pets.

In addition, assisting with laundry, dishes and other maintenance tasks frees up staff to work with animals; which helps to find them a home.  Thank you so much, and remember, I’m asking for help on behalf of the animals who can’t ask you themselves.

WELCOME, 2012!

Happy new year to all of you! I hope to see you at the shelter, as well as at some of the many offsites and events the Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter will host this year. As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me with suggestions or ideas.

I’m trying out a couple of new things this year. Starting in February, offsite adoption events will be scheduled from noon to 3 p.m. rather than starting at 11 a.m. as they have been.

As you know, volunteers who are 16 and older do not have to sign up in advance to do work at the shelter. However, after hearing from several adult volunteers who like to commit to a schedule, I’m offering you the opportunity to note when you intend on volunteering by writing it on a calendar available in the Administrative Trailer. This will alert shelter staff as to whether they can expect volunteers on a given day and will let me know when you’ll be here, as I like to keep in contact
with you. This also will give you an opportunity to team up with other volunteers here. Again, happy new year, and I hope to see you soon!

VOLUNTEERS HONORED FOR OUTSTANDING DEDICATION 

The FFDAS honored several volunteers for their exemplary work in 2011 at our annual holiday party for volunteers and staff, Dec. 7 at Dearborn Hills Golf Course. Each awardee received a personalized Pupcatso painting, the artwork of our very own adoptable shelter animals guided by FFDAS Executive Director Elaine Greene. Following are
the award winners.

Heart and Soul Award: Barb Mattison

Barb created our merchandise program and Fido Bakery, has taken leadership roles at some of the FFDAS’ biggest events, fosters animals and is our webmaster. As Executive Director Elaine Greene said when she presented the Barb the award, “Her greatest skill is developing ideas. She gets them well on the way, helps to mentor a lead for the project, and then moves on to her next great idea.”

Most Volunteer Hours Overall: Sandra Alviani

Sandra spent more than 900 hours in 2011 keeping items in stock to sell at events and through our website to raise funds for the FFDAS. She scouts, purchases, packs and showcases the goods at several events each year, in eye-catching displays she arranges. Sandra has increased the FFDAS’ merchandise sales and the reach of our logo. This
is the second year she’s won the award.

Most In-Shelter Hours –
Working with Animals: Sue Barna

Sue spent more than 800 hours at the shelter, arriving twice a week to clean the Cat Community Center and provide its residents with the love and attention they deserve. This is the second consecutive year Sue received the award, and
we say bravo!

Most Active Student Volunteer: Erin Enright

Erin has shown dedication to the foster felines in her care, even socializing a litter of ferals and turning them into lovable, adoptable kittens. She volunteers at the Bully Splash Bash and other events, and at 13, is following in the footsteps of her parents, Richard and Anne Enright, who are very active with the FFDAS.

Home Away from Home — Fostering Animals: JoAnn Lenhart

JoAnn has provided a second chance to numerous kittens she’s taken into her home. Many have needed extensive medical attention, and she has covered the expenses. JoAnn is all too familiar with long nights of waking up every few hours to bottle-feed kittens and has spent her share of time at the veterinary emergency hospital, covering every base in assuring that the little ones in her care are given every chance. On top of that, JoAnn found time in 2011 to volunteer for our offsite adoption events to help other animals find their forever homes.

Volunteer Extraordinaire: Jill Mohr

Jill is a versatile member of our volunteer team, updating thousands of FFDAS office and volunteer records, as well as organizing data for our microchip program — an invaluable role, since every animal adopted from the shelter is microchipped. Jill’s volunteer work by no means ends at the shelter’s front office, as she researched grants, participated in mailings, helped at events and fostered kittens throughout the long 2011 kitten season.

Offsite adoption events

The more our adoptable animals are seen, the greater their chance at quickly finding their forever homes — and you can help! Offsite adoption events provide us the opportunity to share our mission with new audiences and establish valuable business relationships that can give us the ability to do more for our animals. Offsites also give our adoptable animals a change of scenery along with well-needed love and attention.

Let’s show people from all over metro Detroit what a great job the Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter is doing in caring for and finding homes for pets! Volunteers are needed to transport and showcase dogs and cats, kittens and puppies at the following events. These offsites are open to the public 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. but will be scheduled for noon to 3 p.m. starting in February. Volunteers spend additional time setting up and breaking down the sites.

PETCO

Petco of Allen Park is located off the Southfield Freeway and Outer Drive, in the Independence Marketplace shopping center. Adoption events at this location are held the second Saturday each month. The next is scheduled for Feb. 11.

FRIENDS PET TRAINING CENTER

Our regularly scheduled third-Saturday adoption offsite at the Friends Pet Training Center takes place Jan. 21. The center is adjacent to Pet Supplies Plus, 2621 S. Telegraph Rd. at Oxford in Dearborn.

PETSMART

Our monthly fourth-Saturday offsite at Petsmart, 5650 Mercury Drive at Ford Road in Dearborn, is scheduled for Jan. 28.

We need volunteers for all of these events, and if enough sign up, we can break the days into shifts. If you’re interested in lending a hand at any of these, please contact Tracy Balazy, Volunteer Coordinator, at 313.943.2697 ext. #3555 or volunteers@dearbornanimals.org. Some restrictions apply to volunteers younger than 16 years old.

ADOPT

Nolin is an outgoing 8-month-old Labrador retriever/boxer mix who appears to enjoy when visitors come to see him at the shelter. He’s 48 pounds and has a short, thick coat, a springy tail, floppy ears and very wide-set eyes, for one adorable face! We think he’s a great dog who will make a wonderful companion for a household without children younger than 8 years old, as he tends to put his mouth on people’s hands.

Martin is a gentle, talkative brown mackerel (striped) tabby-and-white cat who deserves a soft place to rest and a sunny window where he can enjoy the sunshine. This sweet boy is 11 years old (mature, but not really all that old for a cat) and came to the shelter with his buddy, Mittens. Someone fell in love with Mittens and took her home recently, leaving Martin wondering when his special person will come along. Could that be you?

The FFDAS always needs postage stamps. If you happen to be at the post office and wouldn’t mind picking up an extra book of Forever stamps, we certainly will put them to good use!

We also need good, sturdy leashes, up to 6 feet long, for walking our dogs. We welcome new or used, and we always can use new collars in various sizes. The shelter also uses a good deal of Clorox bleach and latex gloves. Thank you for thinking of the animals, and ask for a receipt if you itemize your taxes, as all donations to the shelter are tax-deductible.

Cool Cat Casino Night is the next big event on the horizon, 7 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Feb. 18 at Fr. Patrick O’Kelly Knights of Columbus, 23663 Park St. in Dearborn. For $30 in advance or $35 at the door, you can spend the evening trying your luck at Blackjack, Texas Hold ‘Em,
Let It Ride and Bingo. All proceeds benefit the shelter’s homeless animals.

Interested in volunteering at the event? We need volunteers for various roles, especially dealers, and we’ll train you! Please contact Cool Cat coordinator Debbie Stewart at debbiedoos@att.net.

If you’d like to sell $5 raffle tickets that offer a chance at a $2,000 Walmart gift card, please come to the administrative trailer across the parking lot from the shelter and sign out tickets in groups of 10. Ask for Sharon or Tracy between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. every day except Sunday. Proceeds and ticket stubs are due back to the administrative trailer by 4 p.m. the day of the event. Debbie is generously offering $50 in cash for every 100 raffle tickets you sell. We’re only selling 2,000, which increases buyers’ chances of winning, and because the gift card is donated, all proceeds will benefit the FFDAS and help send animals home!

The winning ticket will be drawn at Cool Cat Casino Night, and the winner need not be present.

Adoptable cat Girl (Baby)

Meet Your Match
We’ve received responses from volunteers interested in working on the Meet Your Match cat personality-testing program, but our felines certainly could use more of a boost. MYM cage cards help shelter visitors connect with our cats by providing more information — is this a cat who craves cuddling, one who’s a bit of a curmudgeon but has his lovable moments, or a feline who prefers not to share her house and people with another pet?

A volunteer experienced in the MYM program is willing to train interested parties in the basics. Volunteers ideally would work on this project on Sundays, when the shelter is closed to the public, or other days after the cats’ living areas have been cleaned. It’s best to do when visitors are few, since you’ll be taking cats out of cages and need minimal distractions. We want to create MYM cards for residents of
the Cat Room and Cat Community Center.

It’s a new year, so …
If you haven’t done so, please log the rest of your 2011 hours so that our diligent time-tracking volunteer, Pat Ludwig, can record them. I don’t mean to nag, but this is a monumental task, and turning in your hours as you accumulate them makes the system run much more efficiently. Record your hours in the time-tracker binder at the shelter, or track them quickly and easily on our website.

We compile your shelter activities for our records, and we can track your hours efficiently only if you record them in a timely manner. We compile volunteer hours to secure grant funding, inform financial donors, and evaluate the volunteer program — and recognize volunteers for the good work you do here!

The February orientation for new volunteers is scheduled for noon on Saturday, Feb. 11 in the auditorium at the Henry Ford Centennial Library,
16301 Michigan Ave. in Dearborn. Pass the word to anyone you know who’s interested in volunteering!

New Year, New Dog!

Is your New Years Resolution to have a better behaved dog? Are you tired of your dog jumping on guests, dragging you down the street, stealing food off counters, or other behaviors that you just can’t stand?

The Association of Pet Dog Trainers has declared January National Train Your Dog Month. They have scheduled facebook chats and webinars on training and behavior issues.

Training Tip 

Do you always give the same treat to your dog for doing what you ask them? We often forget that there are many different rewards that our dogs like and it can change over the weeks, months and years. Here is how to change that.

• Take a sheet of paper and fold it in half. Make 3  columns, label them Food, Toys, and Interaction.
• On the top half of the paper list what your dog likes under each heading .
• On the bottom half of the sheet list in order of most favorite to least favorite.

You now have a list of ways to reward your dog thoughout the day, that does not always have to be food. Place this list on your refrigerator so the family knows ways to reward your dog.

Ask the Trainer

Thank you for the great response to the Ask the Trainer, here is one of the questions.

Q:  “My dog jumps on guest that come to the house. What can I do to stop this?” — Submitted by Tom.

A:  Tom, let your guest know that your dog is in training, when they come over they are not to pet the dog until all four feet are on the ground.

So when the door bell rings or a knock comes on the door place a leash on your dog, you may want to hang a leash by the door to make it easier, unlock the door and step back 5-8 feet from the door allow 3 foot of leash out and allow your guests to come in. As they come in your dog will jump up and maybe even bark or whine, your guests should turn around and walk toward the door and try again.

Repeat until your dogs feet remain on the floor. It is going to take some time the first few greetings, but you will notice that it gets short, and soon you will not need to put the dog on a leash when guest come over!

Here is my story: I won the Chase-It  at a dog event and started playing with my dog Esmee. She was a puppy at the time and she just loved it. She  gets very excited when I bring the toy out. When we first started to play with it she would stalk and chase it, now she will wait for it to come near her to grab for it. So I have to get creative in moving the toy for her to chase it. A great toy to wear your dog out!

So Esmee and I give it 3 out of 3 paws!

Astro is a 4-year-old sweetheart. He is very friendly and loves attention, as you can tell from his wagging tail. Astro did exceptionally well on his temperament test. He sniffed the cats and liked playing with another dog. Astro weighs 68 lbs. and knows the “sit” command, and he’s attending the shelter’s dog-training classes.

If you like the look of the Maine coon, we think you might like Tina, a petite, long-haired cat with a dark brown mackerel (striped) tabby coat and a sweet face. Tina, who is 3 years old, came to the shelter as a stray during the Christmas holiday, and she hopes to start the new year with someone who loves her. She’s awaiting your visit in the Cat Room! She does not mind when the dogs come in for a visit.

72 cats went home 4 the holidays

It brought a song to our hearts as friends came out in droves to our Home 4 the Holidays Adopt-A-Thon, which took place on December 2 & 3.  Joy-filled thanks to everyone who tweeted about our special, devoted hours to volunteering, and to all of our open-hearted and open-armed adopters.  The terrific news is that 72 cats were adopted and will spend the holidays with their new families.

75+ dogs & cats took their place

Unfortunately, as quickly as these lucky felines found homes, even more came into our shelter—along with their canine friends.  During the first 12 days of December twice as many dogs came through our doors and nearly 3 times the number of cats than in 2010.  Some are strays, some relinquished by owners who can’t afford them.  All deserve a home of their own 4 the holidays.

Fifth graders at Haigh Elementary School in Dearborn joined forces to raise $440 during our annual Halloween Beggin’ for Bones fund drive.  It was our pleasure to visit with the more than 90 students and to bestow the 2011 Golden Bone Award, which goes to the group that raises the “most bones.”

Some little girls and some big girls are lending a paw to help our rescues during the holidays.  And, we can’t thank them enough!

A Daisy Troop (first graders) from Duvall Elementary School in Dearborn hosted a food-and toy-drive for our animals.  During their tour of the shelter they helped out with kitty socializing and snuggling.  See more photos from their visit.

The sorority sisters of the University of Michigan-Dearborn Panhellenic Council are hosting a Toys 4 Spot toy-drive for our dogs and cats.  They set up boxes all around the UM-D campus, and will be collecting items through December 5.  Go, Wolverines!

The Friends are seeking volunteers who are interested in becoming Business Ambassadors (BAM).  The BAM program raises funds for the shelter’s operating budget through collection of donated money via canisters placed at local businesses.  The program cultivates business relationships and generates awareness of FFDAS events.

We’d like to add to the approximately 75 canisters in the area.  We make initial contact with the business, and all you do is visit your location(s) when needed–this could be monthly or more often if the canister fills quickly.  You simply empty the money into a bag, count it, and bring it to the shelter with a simple form we provide.  For more information, contact Volunteer Coordinator Tracy Balazy at 313.943.2697, ext. #3555 or volunteers@dearbornanimals.org.

black tie brings in the “green”

Southeast Michigan supporters enjoyed an “eco elegant evening for four-footed friends” at our 11th Black Tie & Tails, the annual premier fundraiser hosted by Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter.  On Friday, October 21, more than 250 attendees, donors, and supporters gathered at the Dearborn Inn and helped raise over $111,000 to assist our rescues.  The best news?  Number of animals “re-homed” thanks to Black Tie guests:  6

Friends thank our in-kind kids:  cody ross

Cody Ross, 15, is a member of Troop 900 and attends Stevenson High School in Livonia.  He selected the Friends for his Eagle Scout project because he has had a lifelong concern for animals in his community.  Cody had an ambitious goal to help the animals and with the support of friends and the community he met his goal.

Cody and his friends built 6 cat posts for our rescues, plus he purchased a dog lure for the shelter aninmals, and designed and created a portable obstacle course.  In addition, Cody donated a bench for the play yard.  Read more about Cody’s project.
