4-legged update: jessie & chevy

Each of our animals is special in their own right, but in some cases we are amazed by unique stories of inspiration.  It is our pleasure to update you on two four-legged friends featured in March and April.

Jessie went home with some very special adopters.  They have another Husky who is missing tips of his ears and a snake with a broken back.  According to Jessie’s new mom, “She fits right in and completes our little family.”

A truly happy ending for Chevy, the little trooper who was thrown from a moving car in early April.  Her new name is Lady, and we saw firsthand that she is now one happy, spoiled girlie.

Mike Ennis Memorial Golf Outing:  Despite the chilly temperatures and soggy greens, the 3rd annual outing was a smashing success!  Held on April 20; attended by 72 golfers; raised $3,891.  “I cannot thank everyone enough for supporting this event in remembering Mike,” shares organizer Jeff Koski from Kalitta Air.  “Please mark your calendars for May 3, 2014, and come out and join us!”

Purina’s pets for people program

Thanks to our partnership with Purina’s Pets for People program, eligible adopters age 55 and older can adopt the following at no cost:
- Cats (sorry, kittens aren’t included)
- Senior dogs  (Senior dogs are 8 years and older for large and medium dogs and 10 years and older for small –under 20 pounds–dogs.)
This is a limited time offer and you must mention this program when you complete your cat or senior dog application.

Our rescues blossom in foster care, allowing us a closer look into a pup’s personality.  According to her foster family, 10-year-old Rosario “is completely housetrained, loves to be held and cuddled, and will give kisses freely!”  Read more about Rosario in her foster diary.  Rosario’s adoption fee: $100. And if you are 55 or older, Rosario qualifies for the Purina Pets for People program.  Read more about the no-cost adoption for eligible adopters in the accompanying article.

Did you know?  Kittens may spend up to two months or more in foster care where they receive love and care until they are old enough to be adopted. During that time foster families are provided with supplies and support.  Our kittens, like Annie, are wondering if you could help their feline and canine buddies all year long by becoming a monthly donor.  Just $20 a month provides litter to our kitties for six weeks!  It’s easy and automatic.

This year there are two opportunities to represent the shelter and honor our military, veterans and fallen.  We will be walking in both the Lincoln Park parade at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 19 as well as our traditional appearance at the Dearborn Memorial Day parade on Monday, May 27 also at 10 a.m.

Pit Crew members are invited to walk our adoptable dogs; but we also need people to carry banners or posters of adoptable cats (equal billing, after all.)  Please let me know if you would like to participate in one or both of these fun friendraiser events and I will get the details (such as meeting time) to you.  Start practicing your wave!

A Blue-Eyed Survivor

Rescues with very special needs (like Victory, whose story we will continue to follow), come to us on a regular basis.  Our most recent very special friend is a one-year-old Siberian husky names Jessie.

A different way of looking at the world

Jessie arrived at our shelter with a bulging right eye.  An examination determined that she had a detached retina and glaucoma, and eye-removal surgery was necessary.  Jessie also tested positive for heartworm.

Despite a double whammy, Jessie has recovered amazingly well—continuing to prove that animals are resilient creatures if given a second chance.  Like Victory, Jessie thanks you for donations to Hope’s Heroes, which funds our special-needs rescues.  Like Victory, Jessie also needs you to share her story on Facebook and Twitter so we can find a home for this happy husky who craves attention.

Victory Inspires Global REsponse

Victory has truly lived up to her name!  Born with a birth defect where parts of the bones of her front legs are missing, Victory’s inspirational story was first picked up by local media.  Her story then went global.  “We really appreciated the response,” says our Executive Director Elaine Greene.  “We were so surprised by how quickly the news traveled.  Within a few days we were getting calls and donations from as far away as the Philippines.”

The funds we’ve received will go toward three apparatuses that are being made for Victory:  a protective vest for indoors, a sled-like device so she can easily move around on carpet, and a mobility cart for outdoor use.  The remaining donations are part of our Hope’s Heroes program to assist other rescues with medical needs.

Victory’s next “step?”  Elaine’s desire is for Victory to become a therapy dog for humans with disabilities.  “I think she would bring a lot of hope!”  Visit our Hope’s Heroes page to view a video of Victory courtesy of WDIV Channel 4.

spring comes early to cool cat casino

Neither sleet, nor snow, nor frigid temperatures could keep guests away from the 2013 Cool Cat Casino Night on Saturday, February 16!  As a result, they were rewarded with a terrific “tiki time” at our 8th annual Hawaiian-themed getaway.  A thousand “alohas” of thanks to everyone who contributed to the evening’s success.

• Heroic Foster Parents
• Creatively Capturing Our Rescues

V for victory

Can you imagine looking out your window and seeing a miniature kangaroo hopping in your yard?  And then discovering she was a Chihuahua?  This 1-year-old mighty mite was found wandering in a Dearborn neighborhood as a stray.  We call her Victory.

Because of a birth defect, Victory’s front legs are severely malformed—measuring only a few inches with no actual paws.  After evaluating her X-rays, our friends at Michigan Veterinary Specialists report that “not much can be done for her surgically”.  Her medical evaluation continues, but it is our goal to make Victory’s life as comfortable and mobile as possible.

This gutsy girl will need a specially designed mobility cart and other orthopedic equipment to maximize her quality of life.  She is truly a heroic spirit who, with our help, can overcome any obstacle.  Victory needs your Hope’s Hero donation now to cover medical and future equipment costs.  Read more about our Hope’s Hero program to benefit special rescues in need.

Heroic Foster parents

One of the most honored volunteer roles is becoming a foster parent for our companion animals.  These parents are our satellite heroes.  Especially now when our shelter is overflowing with pups!

Our featured foster friend is Martha Dreier.  According to shelter manager Heather Mehi, “Martha is fantastic!  When one of her fosters finds a home, she is immediately ready to embrace another one.”  A tip from Martha:  Promote your foster pup or kitty and take them to off-site adoption events!

We need you!  Foster families provide temporary animal housing for a number of reasons: some animals need extra attention because they are very young, while others need to learn human interaction skills.  Learn more about becoming a foster hero today! Or call Heather directly at 313.943.2697.

Creatively Capturing Our Rescues

Add “model” to the resume of many of our shelter animals. On February 15, students from the College for Creative Studies, Entertainment Arts, spent the afternoon drawing inspiration from our dogs and cats. The Gesture Drawing students had the opportunity to hone their skills and our animals enjoyed the extra attention!

We get a number of requests for tours, educational initiatives, and other outreach opportunities. If your university or school would like to embark on collaboration please contact us at 313.943.2697.

exceptional emily looking for love

One-year-old Emily is our Valentine spokes-pup.  Last February, when she was just a baby, Emily was found wandering outside in the cold.  She had severe burns on her tiny face, which have healed, but she still retains some of the scars.

healing for the heart:  reiki

A shelter environment can be quite stressful for animals, so a little relaxation goes a long way.  Enter volunteer Joyce Fenech.  Joyce is a massage therapist who has started to perform weekly Reiki treatments on our rescue dogs.

Healing hands for Lizzie

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing.  Joyce’s positive touch is soothing the hearts and bodies of our rescues.

In late January, LOGOS Youth Club at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church brought some Valentine love a little early to our rescues.  They made dog pull toys and filled oodles of empty plastic water bottles with kibble and treats—an easy-to-make “busy toy” for our pups.

We send Valentine’s wishes to the more than 25 area businesses that sold and posted Santa Paws during the holidays.  It was a hot race among the veterinary clinics, but our friends at Dearborn Family Pet Care took first place, raising $375.

Help Us Find Homes!

Wow, 161!  That’s the number of animals who found homes in January! But the shelter is brimming with many more great rescues looking for their forever families.  Your participation  at off-site adoption events and at the shelter makes such a difference.  A potential adopter may walk past many worthy animals without your personal interaction.  Your efforts are particularly important in the afternoons, evenings and Saturdays at the shelter to greet visitors, get to know their interests and show potential pets.  Please stop by and help make a match!

2013 marks a friends milestone

As the calendar rolls over to 2013, we look forward not only to a new year, but to a milestone year.  2013 marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter!

Because of your support, we have been caregivers and advocates for nearly 40,000 rescues of all shapes and sizes.  Throughout 2013 we will remember all that we have accomplished together.  We will also invite you to share your heartwarming memories and “tails.”

In addition, we look forward to creating new happy tails—beginning with Snowstorm.  This seven-week-old was found in a local backyard with frostbite on his toes, lips, tail, and ears.  After a warm bath a snuggly baby emerged!

This Baby New Year epitomizes what we are dedicated to:  Rescuing and protecting animals in our community.  Let’s cheer our first 20 years, and toast to our next 20 years together!

keep them safe and warm

A Hot Toddy is a welcome way to keep warm during a cold Michigan winter.  It’s up to us to ensure that our pets also remain warm and cozy during these days of harsh winds, snow, and freezing temperatures.  Check out these and other tips to help keep pets safe:

1.  Limit their time outdoors
Puppies (like Snowstorm) have not developed a tolerance for the cold as well as adult dogs.  Consider paper-training your puppy inside until he appears to be acclimated to the weather.

2.  Watch out for antifreeze!
Antifreeze is a lethal poison for dogs and cats and, because of its sweet taste, animals are attracted to it.  Be sure to thoroughly clean up any spills from your vehicle.

3. Thoroughly wipe off your dog’s legs and stomach when it comes in out of the rain, snow or ice.  Pay special attention to the sensitive paw pads, which may bleed from snow or ice encrusted in them. Remember too that if a dog licks salt, antifreeze, or other chemicals from his paws he could become ill.

What could you do with $2,000?  An awful lot!  WalMart raffle tickets are now on sale!  With only 2,000 printed, your odds of “winning big” in 2013 are pretty good!  It’s also a win-win for the Friends, since we receive 100% of the proceeds.  We tip our hats to the generosity of the Taylor & Dearborn WalMart stores, and Dave Hamilton of The Envelope Printery.

So many of the animals spotlighted during the holidays (like Zizi, Mona, and Snowball) found happy-tail endings with new families.  Now, it’s 14-year-old Ebb’s turn.  Recall that Ebb’s owner reluctantly relinquished him because he became too old to care for him.  Can you fulfill Ebb’s 2013 resolution to find a new home?

 Please help keep our dogs entertained!

It is very simple to give our dogs something to stimulate their minds and help prevent boredom.  Fill 16-oz. bottles with dog food (Pedigree.)  Paper towel tubes can also be filled with dog food and the ends crimped.  Recycle your own bottles and tubes or stop in for supplies at the shelter.  Kongs can also be stuffed with treats at the shelter to help provide entertainment.  And of course, your time walking our dogs so that they have an opportunity to get out of their cages is always much appreciated.
