The ASPCA $100K Challenge inspires animal shelters to save at least 300 more dogs and cats within a three-month period and get rewarded for it – and we could win between $5,000 and $100,000!  Only the top 50 organizations with the most online votes will be accepted into the challenge.

Pudge is our spokesdog for this contest. On this Good Friday Pudge says Peace be with you and please vote.

- Before voting the first time the ASPCA wants to confirm your email address.  If you do not receive this confirming email from the ASPCA, please check your spam folder.

- If you cast your vote on April 5 you may experience a delay in being able to vote until 24 hours have elapsed from the time you previously voted.  The ASPCA is working to correct this problem.

- Please join us for a flash mob on the Dearborn City Hall steps on Tuesday, April 10th at 5:30 p.m.  Wear a white shirt.  We’ll be barking for votes!

some -”bunny” needs you

As a reminder that we can all help combat injustice, the ASPCA has designated April as National Prevention of Animal Cruelty Month.  Bunny is a real-life reminder that animals need us to speak for them.

Strangulation caused Bunny to lose her sight

7-week-old Bunny was found nearly lifeless by some good Samaritans and brought to the shelter.  Both of her eyes were extremely bloodshot.  Upon further inspection, we found that her pupils did not react to light.  This means that little Bunny is nearly blind.

According to our vet friends at Dearborn Veterinary Hospital, such radical hemorrhaging indicates that Bunny was probably strangled.

What you can do:
- Donate now.  Your donation will not only help us care for Bunny, but will also assist us in our education efforts so that someday there might be no more “Bunnies”
- Read about how to recognize the signs of abuse, and how you can be an anti-cruelty advocate
- Forward Bunny’s story and you can be an anti-cruelty advocate right now!

another look at loki

Six-month-old Loki came to us in January with a severely damaged pelvis.  It was ultimately determined that she was probably hit by a car to incur such extensive damage.

When she was strong enough, Loki underwent surgery in mid-March to have her left rear leg removed.  According to our vet friend Dr. Kari Nugent, “Loki is a trooper.  She remained calm and cooperative throughout all of her testing and surgery.  And, it’s a miracle that she is so mobile and has recovered so well.”

How is Loki doing now?  Check out her video to watch this little champion running and playing with her new family!

Thank you to all of our Hope’s Heroes who came to Loki’s rescue.  Her surgery cost more than $1,000, which means you truly helped a hero in need!

orson & diane:  a purr-fect match

Sometimes a purr-fect match is practically made in heaven!  Eight-year-old Orson lost his eye from a corneal infection, and it  may have been difficult for someone to “see” his beauty.  Then, along came Diane.

Diane S. was looking for a friend and Orson more than fit the bill.  As Diane shared with us, “Orson’s missing eye didn’t bother me a bit because I am also missing an eye.”

Because she is a super senior, Orson’s adopton fee was waived through our Purina Seniors for Seniors Program.  Diane was so thrilled with her adoption experience that she and her daughter are now going to make us kitty comforters through our cat comforter program.  Thank you Diane!

ADOPT

pammy.jpg

Pammy is a one-year-old pit bull.  She knows the commands “sit” and “shake” and she is a lot of fun!  She needs to go into a home without cats.  This sweet girl would be an egg-ceptional addition to your family this spring.

volunteer

Hello Volunteers!  I have enjoyed meeting many of you around the shelter and I look forward to getting to know each of you.  I am working hard to fill the big shoes left behind by Tracy Balazy and am very thankful that she will continue to provide her expertise in a volunteer capacity.  Look for her at events and around the shelter!

That feeling of spring in the air signifies a couple of things to me–puppy and kitten season AND Mutt Strut.  If history repeats itself, we will soon be bursting at the seams with young animals that need a short stay at your home before they are old enough to be adopted.  Check out “Become A Foster” for more information.  And be watching your e-mail for opportunities to get involved in Mutt Strut.

I look forward to working with you and always welcome your suggestions.  Don’t hesitate to contact me at 313.943.2697, #3555 or by email at:  volunteers@dearbornanimals.org.
