Currently we need volunteers to support the following ( time sensitive needs are in Red):

Foster Care

Foster one or more animals in your home until they are ready for adoption. Once you qualify as a foster parent, the shelter staff will teach you everything you need to know and will provide you with food, supplies, and support.

  • If you would be willing to foster a mother cat and kittens in your home, the need is great.
  • To become a foster parent to a dog, cat, puppy, kittens or to learn more about the process visit our Become a Foster page.

Working with the Animals

Like your own pets who need walking, cuddling, and grooming, the shelter dogs and cats have the same needs. The shelter needs volunteers to assist visitors with meeting our dogs and cats, and answering general questions.

  • Additionally, volunteers can help provide basic training and socialization to shelter dogs through The Pit Crew. We’re looking for volunteers who would like to work with both bully-breed dogs and all of our shelter dogs to help them earn their CGC (Canine Good Citizen), and take them on outings to Currey’s Family Pet Care, Friends Pet Training Center, Dearborn Memorial Day Parade and community events.   • Our Cat Care Crew provides cat coaching to train and entertain our felines and help make them more social and adoptable. In addition our feline-ality evaluators help to provide more information about the personalities of our cats to improve our matchmaking with new families. Specialized training will get you started. Off-site Adoption Events

Informing the public about the Friends and showcasing animals to the public.

Ongoing:
  • Petco of Allen Park — 2nd Saturday of the month, Noon to 3 p.m.
  • Friends Pet Training Center, next to Pet Supplies “Plus” of Dearborn — 3rd Saturday of the month, Noon to 3 p.m.

In-Shelter

  • Student Mentors — Looking for adult volunteers to lead students through their first day of volunteering at the shelter.
  • Shelter maintenance — We badly need volunteers to assist with dishes, laundry and unfolding newspapers for animal cages.

Work from Home

  • Professional graphic designers — we’re seeking someone who would like to help with one or more projects that directly benefit the shelter.  Please contact Development Assistant Andrea Kuentz at 313.943.2697 or akuentz@DearbornAnimals.org.

Community Outreach

Ongoing:
  • Business Ambassadors (BAMers) — Looking for friendly volunteers that can be relied on to collect donation canister money approximately once a month from a local business and place fliers at the business.

Event Support

  • Black Tie & Tails — Assist with visiting local businesses to solicit silent auction items for this October gala event.  Please contact Andrea at 313.268.6312.
