Volunteer Opportunities

Here is just a sample of the many volunteer opportunities to help inside the shelter, off-site, or even from the comfort of your home.

Working with the Animals

  • Dog walking
  • Shelter-dog training through our Pit Crew, a trained team of volunteers focused on our
    Recycl-A-Bullz program to work with bully-breed dogs
  • Cat cuddling and socialization

Off-site Adoption Events

  • Transporting animals to and from events, transporting supplies and animal crates, and showcasing animals to the public.

Foster Care

  • Foster one or more animals in your home until they are ready for adoption. Once you qualify as a foster parent, the shelter staff will teach you everything you need to know and will provide you with food, supplies, and support. 

Animal Transporter

  • Transports animals to veterinary appointments. 

Disaster Preparedness

  • Willingness to be on call to transport animals from the shelter to a safe place in case of an emergency.

Support Animal Adoptions

  • Adoption follow-up includes making telephone calls and mailing letters from your home, to follow up with people who have recently adopted animals.

  • Dearborn Homecoming (August)

Committee Member – Advance Planning and Preparations For Major Events/Fund-raisers

  • Cool Cat Casino Night (February; Adults only)
  • Mutt Strut Dog Walk & Pet Expo (May)
  • Black Tie & Tails dinner dance & auction (October; Adults only)
  • Auction item donations (ongoing; Adults only)

Fund-raising

  • Capital Campaign (Adults only)
  • Donation Canister Program /  Business Ambassadors
  • Merchandise (sold online and at multiple events throughout the year)

Communication

  • Photographers
  • Writers
  • Distribution of fliers
  • Social-media assistance
  • Phone tree

General Support

  • Mailings for annual appeals and events invitations
  • Telephone calls to event attendees, volunteers, etc.

Volunteer Management

  • New-volunteer mentor 

Student Volunteer Orientation and Student Programs

  • Adult-only position

Project Leader for a Friends Activity

  • Adult-only position
