Caring for Over 45,000 Animals in Need Since 1993

Since 1993, the Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter (FFDAS) have been caregivers and advocates for rescues of all shapes and sizes. Although we operate the Dearborn Animal Shelter under contract to the City of Dearborn, we depend upon donations for over 80% of our annual operating income.

Your donations also support numerous education and community-service programs, such as low-cost spay/neuter and microchip clinics, that directly affect thousands of animals in Southeast Michigan. Our rescues in need paws-itively appreciate your support.

FFDAS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, so your generous donations are 100% tax deductible.

Become a G.E.M. Friend!

G.E.M. means “giving electronically monthly.” The monthly support from G.E.M. Friends is a gift that keeps on giving all year round. At any time we may be surprised by a preponderance of puppies, a cadre of kittens, or crate-fuls of . . . chickens! Because of our G.E.M. Friends, we know we have the resources to make sure that any furred, finned, or feathered friend is met with open arms.

Hope’s Heroes

It’s All About “Hope”

Hope’s Heroes provide for dogs, cats, and other animals who come to our shelter with very special needs. Your Hope’s Hero gift covers the extra care and medical expenses for these animals—including comprehensive medical tests, surgery, medication, and rehabilitation.

Cage Sponsorship

Shelters are very harsh environments and one of our goals is to make the lives of the animals we care for as happy and stress-free as possible. This makes them not only more comfortable, but also more adoptable. Whether an animal stays with us for a few days or a few months, please help provide for their needs while they are in our care.

Your personalized cage plaque will hang on your choice of a dog, cat, puppy, or kitten cage.

Caring Hearts: 3-year pledge to the Friends

What is the Caring Heart Club?

It is a multi-year giving society that allows supporters to create a unique and personal partnership with the Friends and the rescues cared for at the Dearborn Animal Shelter.

What is multi-year pledging?

The amount you pledge this year is the same amount you agree to pledge over the next 2 years.

Why the need for Caring Hearts?

Each year the number of animals who seek safe haven at the Dearborn Animal Shelter tends to increase. As a result, funds needed to maintain day-to-day operations increase as well. Your ongoing gift will help guarantee consistent and known sources of revenue.

What will the proceeds go toward?

Caring Heart dollars help fund day-to-day shelter needs, including:

  • food and formula for more than 2,400 dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens
  • regular medical treatments, such as spaying and neutering, and vaccinations; plus, helping to offset the cost of emergency situations that might arise
Caring Hearts are leaders of the pack

Caring Hearts are leaders of the pack

Lucy was the leader and protector of a group of dogs wandering homeless in our community. This heroic pup took great care of her friends, providing food for them and leading them to shelter. Lucy was the last of her pack to be rescued; she made sure all of her friends were taken care of first. Just like her Caring Heart friends!

“Donation Station” Business Partners

Because of our “Donation Station” business partners, we truly believe that success comes in “cans”—canisters, that is.

Displaying a canister helps spread the good word about the Friends and the Dearborn Animal Shelter. Plus, the generosity of businesses and their customers helps us provide quality care for more than 2,500 rescues each year, as well as launch new programs to assist companion animals and their pet parents.

In 2014, nearly 100 businesses in Southeast Michigan displayed one of our canisters and helped raise over $27,000.

Paws-itive benefit for businesses: Patrons appreciate philanthropic efforts and tend to frequent establishments that form connections with nonprofits. Your customers will notice!

How it “Can” work: Simply provide a prominent space to display our canister. A specifically designated Friends representative will pick up donations on a monthly (or as-needed) basis.

Many thanks to all our Donation Canister Business Partners

Capri Italian Bakery

Location: 4832 Greenfield Rd. Dearborn, MI 48126

Owner: John Jr. and Ronda

Pets: Baker, a Dutch Shepherd Boxer rescue

About Capri: Open now for over 40 years, this local bakery is home to so many for lunchtime. Making their bread, pizza and pepperoni rolls using unchanged traditional family recipes, is what distinguishes this bakery from others. Don’t be surprised when they greet everyone by name. It’s just their family-oriented style.

About John and Ronda: John and Ronda travel over 40 miles a day to welcome their guests. They ensure everyone, employees and patrons alike, are made to feel like family. They are joined by their son, Caleb, a fourth generation master baker.

Did you know? For years, John, Ronda and the family have dedicated their time to support the local community. In addition to supporting the shelter, they also support the Dearborn police and firefighters in their fundraising efforts.

Parties for a Purpose

It takes a village to help some 2,500 dogs and cats each year. And the Friends are fortunate that members of the community come to their rescue. In 2014, businesses and individuals raised more than $77,500 through innovative and creative fund- and friend-raisers. They truly “party for a purpose.”

We have provided some ideas on how you can “party for pets,” but we invite you to come up with your own ideas.

Adults & Businesses: Please contact development staffer Andrea Kuentz at or call 313-943-2697 for more information.

K-12 & University Students: Please contact development staffer Aubrey Huff at or call 313-943-2697 for more information.

Complete your application: If you’re interested in hosting a fundraiser (called a third-party event), please print out the Third-Party Fundraising Proposal and submit the completed form as described.

From cat litter to computer paper, and from postage stamps to puppy toys, we are always in need of items both to work efficiently and to create the best of homes for our rescues while they wait for their forever families.

Wish-list items may be dropped off directly at the shelter. Or, for more information, call us at 313-943-2697.

Remember that all in-kind gifts are 100% tax deductible.

In-Kind Thanks

Ford Direct employees gave from their hearts recently by donating their time as volunteers with shelter spruce up indoor and outdoor projects. The employees organized a collection drive for some needed wish list items. The generous volunteers brought a giant wheelbarrow full of in-kind donations for our pups and kittens, plus folding chairs and a power washer. They also donated a $450 gift card to a local pet supply company.

If you are inspired by the story to help the animals and have a creative drive or fundraising idea, please contact Andrea Kuentz at or 313.943.2697.

Corporate Wish List

It Takes a Lot of Kibble . . .

Imagine over 200 animals living in a 4,000-square-foot space at one time. How much dog food does it take? On average, about 560 pounds of dog food per week. What about cat food? We estimate 200 pounds per week. The numbers are simply astonishing.

Because of the overwhelming amount of supplies, it is often easier for corporations, rather than individuals, to donate much-needed animal items in bulk. In addition, companies have the satisfaction that they are making a difference every day in the lives of animals in need.

If you have items you’d like to donate that are not on the list, or for more information, contact Andrea Kuentz at or call her at 313-943-2697.

Remember that all in-kind gifts are 100% tax deductible.

Thank you to our
corporate Friends!
